Welcome to UniversalDesign4Learning!

This is a wiki for the course SPED 220: Universal Design for Learning - Implications for Career Assessment and Transition at The George Washington University. As a class, we are creating this wiki to share our knowledge among ourselves and with others who recognize the importance of designing learning environments and curricula that incorporate multiple, flexible methods of presentation, expression, and engagement.

We adhere to the following community principles:

  • Diversity among ourselves and others is respected,
  • Teamwork can create products richer than can be created by an individual in isolation,
  • Choices related to methods of expression and engagement provide richer experiences
  • Appropriate accommodations support meaningful participation, and
  • Risk-taking is necessary when educators explore new territories!

When we add to this wiki, we respect the footprints of those who have walked before us. It's OK to correct typos (we all make those) but avoid taking away someone else's voice. Instead, add to the conversation with new information, perspectives, and counterpoints!

Here are some important ideas we've been exploring:

Universal Design: UD is a foundation for UDL; it is about architectural principles. The 3 UDL principles address the spirit of accessibility for all espoused by UD but lean toward choice and differentiation rather than a "one-size-fits-all approach"

Universal Design of Instruction: [class members: if you want to write about this one, click here, delete this red text, and write some key thoughts, origins, examples or facts]

Universal Design for Learning: [class members: if you want to write about this one, click here, delete this red text, and write some key thoughts, origins, examples or facts]

Recognition Network [class members: if you want to write about this one, click here, delete this red text, and write some key thoughts, origins, examples or facts]

Strategic Network [class members: if you want to write about this one, click here, delete this red text, and write some key thoughts, origins, examples or facts]

Learning Styles: [class members: if you want to write about this one, click here, delete this red text, and write some key thoughts, origins, examples or facts]

Flexible digital media: After exploring numerous articles describing learning innovations made possible through digital media that have direct beneifts for all learners, particularly those with ASD, I have to chuckle at early presumptions about technology in education.  I encountered this quote in an article from Autisme France back in 1994.  Karl Popper said, "The computer is just a glorified pencil."  Hmmm.  How many pencils would Karl need to create a collaborative virtual environment?  Just wondering.

Clear goals: [class members: if you want to write about this one, click here, delete this red text, and write some key thoughts, origins, examples or facts]

Systems changeAs Detroit Public Schools teachers, we are extremely limited in our use of internet... We cannot use blogs, wikis or almost any sites that require social communication. How do we get past this barrier??

Liz (who was a past participant in the UDL class) makes a great point: social communication tools are such a great method of incorporating flexible, digital media into classes and it is a huge disappointment when a good solution is out of reach. What are some other ways to use flexible digital text without being hooked to the internet? What if you have 1-3 computers for a group of 20 and only have the standard tools installed? Ideas?
